WHOLE CHARACTER
礼lǐ
politeness; courtesy; good manners; a gift; a ceremony; a rite; to salute; to bow in respect
礼 covers courtesy and gifts: 礼貌 'manners', 礼物 'gifts', 婚礼 'weddings', and 敬礼 'salute'.
ZDIC header gives only a generic 形声 for the modern form; the detailed account belongs to the old form 禮: ZDIC: 会意,从示、从豊 (lǐ) — 豊 was a ritual vessel that also carried the sound. The modern right side does not show 豊, so it is taught as a written piece with honest limits — no sound story is claimed for it.
LEFT: THE ALTAR/SPIRIT SIDE 示, WRITTEN AS THE 礻 FORM — NAMED BY ZDIC (从示)
礻shì
altar; spirit; to show (from 示)
The left-side form of 示; not a standalone page.
In 礼: left: the altar/spirit side 示, written as the 礻 form — named by ZDIC (从示) Shown with its documented or clearly limited role.
RIGHT: A SINGLE HOOKED WRITTEN PIECE
乚yǐ
a hooked stroke piece (bound form)
A bound written piece (the hook form); each page shows its own role and any dictionary shape note.
In 礼: right: a single hooked written piece Not 豊 (lǐ), the old sound side of 禮; no sound hint is claimed, and no 乙 (yǐ) sound relationship is invented.
